Little Dragon Girls

I had posted this blog in my previous profile, ‘mistyfern’. I know some readers might have read my postings in the Advice Line, Magazine site, with the similar messages and are tired of them. But after posting my angry rebuttals against certain responses from the prejudiced members in a recent question there, I felt compelled to re-post this blog again. If you’re tired with my stories of my profession, then PLEASE leave. In this piece, I’ve edited what needed to be edited, and changed what needed to be changed.

The privileged ones. The well-educated ones. The rich. The arrogant ones. The discriminating ones. The biased. The Holier-than-thous. The ones born with silver spoon in their mouths. You should know what's tailor-made for you.

I'm always amazed. And often, empathetic. Amazed with the fearlessness, the Mammoth courage, determinations, stoic standing and diligence of the Chinese women from Mainland China who work illegally in various countries they thought they could ‘find gold’. They have been to Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau (as I was informed) in nightclubs, massage parlors, karaoke lounges, etc. Their hardships and difficulties to earn money in a foreign land, only to improve their families’ financial situations back in their motherland China, never once leaves me without feeling disturbed. They encounter many folds of difficulties, compare to us, the local girls who live easier being local earthworms.

Most of them come to Malaysia via student visas. Using these visas (a violation), they work illegally in the nightclubs and other places where they could sell themselves. The valid period of their visas isn't long, usually 3 months, as most only applied to study the English language here, and not for Degrees or Masters. The locals call them ‘xiao lung nu’ or ‘little dragon girls’.

Some were willing to share with me their enormous difficulties, here and back in their homeland. They didn’t have ample time, but urgently needed to earn as much as possible before their visas expired. First of all, they had to earn enough money to pay off the amount they owe to their agents and the flight tickets, within the valid period of their visas. These girls could only pocket the money they earned AFTER earning enough to pay off their debts to their agents and the flight tickets. Those amounts were not small.

In certain nightclubs or massage parlors, prices for these Chinese girls were lower than ours, the local girls’. There were reasons for that. The Chinese girls AGREED to receive the lower pays. It also meant they were willing to work HARDER, for LESS money. Sometimes the pays were so small, to the point of exploitation, but they STILL allowed themselves to be exploited, so that they’d earned something, rather than nothing. Choosing exploitation over poverty is a real poignant decision.

And the c*ndom issue. We local girls never asked, the Chinese girls never told. We only heard the revelations from the . They told us the Chinese girls would agree to offer s*x services with OR without using c*ndoms. Not one, not two told us that, but many more. Now, choosing the risk of AIDS over poverty is an even more terrifying, scary decision!

To them, taking such deals was akin to gamble with card games. (To us, it’s a Russian roulette, a bet of life or death). If they win, they’d collect their pays with clean bills of health. If not, then it would be an unimaginable horrifying tragic. And to keep on living and working within the short period of time, they’d occupy their heads with the rewards or their earnings of the day. AIDS or Herpes, should never occur in their minds, AND should be overlooked entirely. Or anything negative like that would affect their thoughts, and consequently turned down the chances to earn more, which were already difficult to get by.

To them, both easy and Herculean jobs seemed to be Mission Possible. They’d attempt the grim, difficult, painful, and even dangerous tasks, only to earn the rewards, considerable or less. Once, I witnessed a Chinese girl who willing to gulp down the entire remainder, almost ¾ of the bottle of Hennessy VSOP, neat, in front of the and us, the rest of the hostesses, for only RM300 (U$ 78.94). After finish gulping all down, the hapless girl collapsed and had to be carried out of the karaoke room.

Their great agony of destitution back home, which lead them to brave themselves to go through the risky and life-threatening paths, is unknown to most Malaysians of all societal classes. And the worst, most arrogant and least considerate among all are the trendy YUPPIES, who are very quick to condemn, criticize, hurling offensive name-callings and despise these Chinese girls to no end. (They were born with silver spoon in their mouth, of which they did nothing to earn).

These girls’ situations of deficiency and deprivation of even basic necessities back home never spring to mind, and enjoying life is only these Yuppies’ concerns. Hedonistic as it sounds, these privileged people would never learn. They watch TV with great interests whenever there are news with scenes of scantily clad foreign girls being hauled into the police trucks. Later, a ha ha.

Well, one’s wealth level, like the rising of a Hollywood starlet, would soar, but later might fall into the lowest pit, like the unexpected declining of fame of the starlet. Serves them right, if that really happens to the Yuppies. With popcorns and Coke, I’ll watch these fallen kiasus, who once enjoyed each moment of showing off their Jimmy Choos, Christian Diors, Pradas and Jaguars, now must struggle to adapt to their newly unfamiliar, bitter and agonizing, miserable austere lives.

We all know that this is one of the oldest known profession but what surprises me is the laxity of heatlh measures now that HIV patients grows rapidly in numbers. Just to remind them is not enough, your government has the main concern in this kind of social defects. Would you believe that a single case of this dreaded disease can explode and create a full blown scare within the trade workers. Worstly, this can spread like wildfire all through out since lots of the prefered customers are foreigners.

This social issue will stay here no matter what? But a little awareness of the unwanted possibilities must be discuss for these people are not covered by social securities like normal workers do have? I never heard of a workers union on this kind of work, in short individualism is the name of the game. Work at your own risk as I coin this out.

I salute you for bringing this out in the open, a least the chance that somebody out there might read this out and handle their most concern.

Be safe and warm...God bless!

It happened everywhere, PA, even here in my country agents are recruiting girls going to malaysia and singapore for only 3 months, their job is like that, I pity them because they need to sell themselves just to improve the lives of their families way back home and at the same time i also salute them for their courage to go to another country and take the challenge...

I have a friends also working like that, one are already settle here, she chooses to settle down because of the bad experience she had once in a hand of his malaysian BF who keep beating here every time he get jealous, like what you said some men don't want to use c*ndom for protection, no choice but to allowed these men to f***k her risking her health for small amount of money, but the saddest thing that she told me that mamasang get triple amount than what she gets (maybe that's really the rules.Other one is still there, holding to her Singaporean man who always helping her to hide from the immigration officer, i don't know if she is lucky enough to have a guy who's helping her. The last time i heard from her is month ago, she was crying over the phone, she just came from police station, they get all her money that she earned that night and 3 men abused her before those monster release my friend, see how brute some people. They treated her badly because she is a s*x worker that what she told me and they were foreign in that country...

You laugh at me bec i am different, i laugh at you because you're all the same

You may not believe this, but the 'little dragon girls' are also in the cities in England. Here, they can earn a lot more and 'may' get better treatment. They are the 'selected' few bought in by 'trafficers' and have their passports taken away and are then forced into the s$$x trade.
It happens everywhere to one degree or another. As long as there is a demand and 'so called men' who have the means are willing to pay, the trade will continue.
The question I would ask all those 'men' - "how would you feel if this was YOUR little sister? "
I hope you can see my little light shining from afar into your dark place.

well said TG and elle....since it takes 2 hands to clap, this trade will go on and on after all isn't it the oldest profession? tese gals are everywhere in uk and oz. why can't it be cleaned up? it simply can't cos there are demand...always demand. therefore like it or not, legalise it so that it can be controlled.

there other fact is that there are so many girls in china wanting to make some fast buck and thinking that if they meet their target they will stop but the fact is when $ comes too easy, giving up becomes more difficult.....similar to other vices i.e. pushing hard-drugs.

what can we do about it?

Misty - I find it very hard to take in the mind-set of the society you describe. It is sooo different to anything I have known. All I can hope for, is that as the far east developes and becomes more prosperous, these sorts of poverty and the attitudes towards the 'trade' will change.
For my small part, I have not and will never take part in that trade here in the west or when I visit the far east or anywhere else.
Your words mean far more than I've heard from anyone else.

I heard a lot of stories like that. And I never thought it was that really bad.

In Japan they are using fake marriage to recruit talents and force them to work but recieve very few amount in return. She has to pay her fake husband monthly and the recruiter too. Some recruiters use their recruited talents first for their own pleasure before marrying the fake husband.

I also work at the club but my work is only to do shows.

Before I have a grtoup but now I'm travelling alone performing with other Japanese enka banquet and dai halls.

I also entertain but we are not force or allowed to do such job. I think I'm still lucky.

Now that entertainers here in Japan are so few some married Asians even those with the age of 55 still works at the night club with her 2 daughters.

This is very informative.

ah looi, my friend Richard aka YangHeMa (I am Goldman Huang Shan who previously used Yang's handle after he discontinued early last year. i was too lazy to choose a new handle but having been here so long, AsiaFind changed my handle upon request with a good reason) a friend checked with the immigration authority and to date closed to 180,000 chinese have jumped plane..i.e. came to visit and never returned...while there were here they hijack others' husband etc etc and of late they are hired as contract wives at RM5,000/- a month to men who wantsto change their wardrobe onece a month.

sometimes i wish they would be burnt like joan of arc not because they came to sell themselves but they rob others' husbands. Now the real wives have taken the task to Michael Chong of the MCA but what can he do? one man against the rest? Richard know of a girl whom I also know who jump plane and managedto returned to china through a govt loophole (not the china embassy) after making enough for 2 yrs.

in china, i visited fu[kcq]ing and those places where most of these girls hail from. their money are used for their parentsto built castles and to show off. but their parents never knew the real story. when back, these girls behave just like any good peasant girls.

The girls are usually from fu[kcq]ing, Fuzhou, Ningde, Putien, Kutien, and other counties from poorer province like Jiangxi, Guangxi etc.
