Sleeping Translator The story happened this morning and the memory is still fresh so I have to write it down now! All of the foreigners living in this city (Aomori) were called to attend a translation class. It's all about hospital, insurance and so on. This is a project of International Relations here in Japan (Kokusai Koryu). Whenever there are foreign patients who were unable to explain their situation, the hospital will call any of us (only those who attended the lesson) to translate. I've been in this volunteer work for almost seven years. Almost all of the nurses and doctors in any hospital in this city knew me. This kind of volunteer work is very time consuming, specially when the patient is very demanding. There is one Filipina patient that I've been helping for almost 6 months. She's only 20 years old, got pregnant and need to have a monthly check-up. His husband either doesn't know what she is saying. I wonder how she got pregnant without understanding any Japanese language. Well as far as I know we don't need to talk too much when it comes to that thing but only the uhhh and the ahhh! I slept at around eleven o'clock last night and my celphone rang at around one o'clock this morning. It's the husband of the pregnant Filipina, asking my help to go with him in the hospital becasue his wife is in labor. I went with him without wearing my INVERTED NIKE (referring to my eyebrow) and my pussycats eye, and my railroad (nose line). When we arrived the hospital, the patient is already inside the Operating Room. The doctor explained some instructions on what they are going to do to her and told me to translate anything that will make her calm. She was doing okey and following whatever I told her to do. I was sitting beside the patient when the doctor did something and I saw many blood. At first I was okey then I started to faint and my stomach started to twist and I feel so uncomfortable and there was a BLACKOUT! I heard a loud cry of a baby and some applause! I opened my eyes and the doctor told me , "It's a baby boy!" I was very puzzled and forgot why I am there and I don't feel any pain and I was shocked, I thought I was the one who give birth. Then I remembered I was there to translate not to sleep. Actually when I was not yet unconcious, I guess I only translated 3 to 4 instructions. I went home alone, they forgot all about me. I even payed my own taxi. CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. MRS. MATSUBAYASHII! Simply J |
