Night Nine: The Interview

If my were to look into the mirror with a mirror behind him and see a several of himself to infinity I'm sure that this would make him bark. But only one would bark not a million. This is similar to human behavior. Several people will follow the crowd, but only one or two will stand up and howl.

Mr. James McClintock would be just in time for his interview if he left his apartment immediately. The ad promised $55,000. That would be enough for him to survive in this city. He began to wonder if he should have left more time as he came up to the intersection. No, he had just enough time. He needed to concentrate on what he was going to say at the interview. He had lots education, experience and skills. As he crossed at the light he saw a body in the road. The homeless were frequent sights lying along the sidewalk, so he quenched his inner warning mechanism and continued to walk. He told himself that there were several walking behind him. One of them not in a hurry would stop.
Mr. McClintock finished crossing the street. Just one block away now. He began to put a skip in his step to avoid those oncoming. Above though he heard a cry for help just as he passed under a building made of glass. A man above him was dangling by a safety cable. James thought, “Apparently, the man fell from the window washer platform.”
James looked behind him. Several people were passing him. One of them would help.
James ran now. He had no more time for delays. He had just enough time to get to the interview in time. There was the building just ahead. He entered and ran to the elevator. A leg was caught between the two doors. Certainly there was a body attached to it. James looked over at the guard. “Can’t you see someone needs help. I’ve got to run to an interview.”
The guard smiled. James ran up the stairs to suite 777. At the door he calmed himself. He was having a strange day. He had to focus on the interview. Nothing was more important than this job. He took a deep breath and entered.
“I’m Mr. James McClintock, here for the one o’clock.”
The woman at the desk cracked her gum. “You’ve had your interview. I’m sorry to inform you that you are not our kind of company material.”
James took a step back, “No, you see I haven’t interviewed yet. I’m James McClintock for the one o’clock appointment. You, you called me, I remember your voice. You told me that I had an interview at one.”
The woman looked at James before she spoke slowly, “You’ve had your interview Mr. McClintock. Let me spell it out for you. You did not pass our test on morality. The man in the street works here. The man on the window washer platform works here. The woman with her leg in the elevator works here. Each cell phoned me as to your behavior. You did not pass our test, Mr. McClintock.”
James looked around, “What is this? I didn’t know I was taking a test.”
The woman began to file her nails, “What good is a test on morality if you know it’s a test?”
“None,” James whispered as he began to back out of the office.
“Wait, I want to talk to your boss. I don’t play games. I want to know why the (blank) it’s so important to test morality anyway. Who is this boss?”
The woman smiled, “No need to raise your voice, Mr. McClintock. The boss is me. Again, I’m afraid you haven’t got the kind of morality we are looking for at this office.
