Think For Yourself From very young, we are told to do as told. Certainly, this keeps peace in the home and discipline in the classroom. But what happens if the person in control is morally wrong in your eyes? On the Discovery channel tonight, I saw a program that discussed how innately evil people can be. After Hitler, psychologists studied what made people follow orders without question. They used a fake shock machine and an actor. The "teacher" was to ask the "student" a question. When the student got the question wrong, he was to be shocked in increasing intensity. The highest level of shock was to lead to death. 65% of all people in the study went to the highest level. That's 65% of people that participated who were willing to kill just because they were prompted to by an authority figure. In this case, the authority figure was the psychologist. It's important to not only teach our to follow directions from authority figures, but to also teach them how to determine when they must think for themselves. |

I believe those human experiments were part of the theories of conditionings advanced by B.F. Skinner. In the USA educational system, allowing children to think for themself is always emphasized. Many Asian parents, whom grew up in Asia, have difficulties seeing the perceived lack of a proper education in America. But thats what US educations teach. They teach us not only to learn what is facts, but to question the validity of the facts. By the time we attended high school, and more so in college, we moved beyond learning facts, and began to learn theories. Trying to learn theories about our world is not easy. Many Asian parents never prepared their children for that change of approach in a higher education. For that, many students whom may have earned high grades while in high school, sometimes began to fail in college. Nik
