Gig... The word gig has several meanings, but the one most popular (to me) is the musicians slang for engagement. Originally coined by 1920's jazz musicians, gig usually refers to a one night performance as opposed to regular work as in 4 nights a week at the local Elk's Club. I was a musician in my teenage years and performed many gigs at local venues, including school dances, hotel parties and night clubs. The largest gig I performed at was a concert at a college. There were some 20,000 to 25,000 people in attendance. |
