Oscars: Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway Announce Wrong Best Picture Winner

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, stars of 1967's classic Bonnie and Clyde, appeared at the Oscars on Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the film.

The duo presented the best picture Oscar at the 89th Academy Awards, taking the stage to resounding applause from the audience.

Beatty and Dunaway announced the wrong best picture winner, announcing La La Land instead of Moonlight the correct winner.

"This was not a joke," Beatty assured everyone, after admitting to the mistake.

This was Dunaway's first time presenting the best picture award on Oscars night, but Beatty has done it twice before - once in 1975 and again in 1990. Beatty recently made a return to the screen, with his first film appearance in front of the camera in the 2016 drama Rules Don't Apply, which he also co-wrote, produced and directed.

The 89th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, were held Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and aired on ABC.

I watched exactly what happened that Oscar night on TV, ABC channel 7 for the last 20 minutes. I know Warren Beatty didn't announce "La La Land" and he was confused why "Emma Stone" name on that card. However, I was confused why the envelope had been held by Beatty and later on it revealed "Moonlight" was the Best Picture winner. There were too many people stood on the stage and I didn't see who switched the correct envelope to Beatty during the confusing moment. The camera didn't show when the envelope switching moment. Everyone confused. It was not Warren Beatty nor Faye Dunaway's fault. The whole thing was that two employees of PWC who carried the two suitcases gave Beatty the wrong (copy of Best Actress) envelope. It took long time to know the fact. However, it was good that the producer of La La Land immediately announced that "Moonlight" is the "Best Picture" winner. I admire his courage that he hand-over the Oscar award to the rightful winner. Also Emma Stone was the first person who discovered the mistake because she got the 1st envelope of Best Actress" on her hands but why 2nd envelope said the same for "Best Picture" with her name on it. She immediately told her "La La Land" team. I admire her courage to tell other team member that she got two same envelopes.

We didn't know there were "One Original" envelope and "One Copy" of envelope in two separate suitcases. Emma Stone received the "Original" envelope for "Best Actress" and the 2nd envelope she got was the copy of "Best Actress", not for "Best Picture". We learned the fact the next day when PWC explained and apologized for their mistake. The whole thing is a "Mix-Up".

Yes, I heard the same from the news that these two employees of PWC can't handle the Oscar envelopes any more. They mixed up the "Best Actress" copy envelope to Warren Beatty instead of "Best Picture" envelope. Big mistake that made Warren Beatty so embarrassed in front of large audience and celebrities.

PricewaterhouseCoopers ‘Sincerely Apologizes’ for Oscar Mix-Up, Plans to Investigate

PricewaterhouseCoopers, the official accountant of the Academy Awards, issued a statement on the embarrassing flub on Sunday night’s Oscars, in which Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read “La La Land” as best picture instead of the actual winner, “Moonlight.”

“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture,” the statement read. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.”

“We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation,” the statement added.

The mix-up resulted in one of the most chaotic conclusions of an awards show in recent memory. Beatty and Dunaway were apparently given the envelope for Emma Stone’s best actress win that was announced just moments earlier. By the time the mistake had been fully realized, the “La La Land” crew had already begun their speech. “La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz told a shocked Dolby Theater, “There’s a mistake. ‘Moonlight,’ you guys won best picture.”

Explaining the flub, Beatty said, “I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, ‘La La Land.’ That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

Social media seemed to confirm Beatty’s story. Oscar attendees, including 2015 host Neil Patrick Harris, tweeted photos of the envelope, which did indeed seem to be for best actress.

Nominees involved seemed just as confused as viewers. Backstage, Stone told reporters, “I was holding my best actress card.” “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins said backstage that he was given “no explanation,” but that Beatty did show him the famed card after the ceremony.

The Academy has not issued a statement of its own, but sent out the PWC statement to media outlets.
